Palate Cleanser

What is a palate cleanser? - A palate cleanser is something to help clear our sense of taste. It wipes out any leftover flavors from foods or drink we have ingested.

Why do we need a palate cleanser? - Many of the foods we eat leave lasting residues or chemicals in the mouth. People often refer to after taste, but sometimes you may not recognize that there is flavor leftover. Whether you notice it or not, these chemicals may continue to stimulate your taste buds and tweak your sense of taste. They will disrupt the way any new item tastes. A cleanser clears the mouth in preparation for something new. It resets our sense of taste and we are able to taste the true flavors of the next bite.

What are some good palate cleansers? - Many different things can be used. Essentially, anything that clears your taste is a good cleanser as long as it does not leave a lingering flavor of its own. Sorbets are some of the most well known. They have become a rich tradition in France and come in a variety of different flavors. Another common cleanser is an apple slice. Its crisp and tart taste is perfect to neutralize leftover flavors. Here is a list to help identify some of the most common cleansers:

  • Sorbet - Many different options: Apple, Lemon, Lime, Orange, etc..
  • Apple Slices
  • Celery Sticks
  • Sparkling Water
  • Water with a lemon wedge - This is common in many restaurants. If you want to try something different, try adding a different citrus to your water. Try a chunk of fresh pineapple, a lime slice, or a small piece of orange peel.
  • Soda Crackers

Now that you have some good examples, try them out. Some will work better than others but it is fun to clear your mouth and get the full taste of foods.

In the future, hopes to provide some recipes for different cleansers. Check back and see what we post. If you have any recipes you would like to share, let us know and we can post them as well.
